The Big Brahms Bonanza
Saturday 1st October 2005
Can you face the music?
(... and play 4 symphonies, 2 overtures, 2 serenades, 1 set of variations – and perform the German Requiem – all in ONE day?)
Join the Cambridge Philharmonic Society (and friends) for the full Brahms experience!
In order to raise funds for its ambitious series of concerts, all of Brahms’ symphonies, together with 2 overtures, 2 serenades and the wonderful German Requiem will all be played (and sung) in one day by the Cambridge Philharmonic Society – all to be conducted by our new conductor Tim Redmond, or perhaps others who are prepared to pay for the privilege!
Players (and singers) from the Society will be asking their friends and acquaintances for sponsorship – depending on how many of the works they are able to play.
In addition, the Cambridge Philharmonic are delighted to welcome other players, singers and conductors who can raise sponsorship money (or pay) to join them for all or part of their epic task.
Choral workshop
While the players of the Cambridge Philharmonic work their way through Symphonies 2 to 4 in the afternoon, the singers will take part in a choral workshop lead by chorus master Chris Whitton so that they are piping hot and ready for the German Requiem at 4:15pm!
All that Brahms
The German Requiem, one of Johannes Brahms’ most deeply felt works (written for soloists, chorus and orchestra), is central to a career that saw him produce the most famous violin concerto in the world, 2 piano concertos and 4 magisterial symphonies. But it was the Haydn Variations (and the Requiem) that first brought him international renown.
Deeply romantic, committed to his friend Robert Schumann (and in love for years with his wife Clara), Brahms wrote music that is expansive and beautiful. And we’ll be playing (singing) most of it in one day!
