’Tis the season to be jubilant − Cambridge Philharmonic Society to perform Bach’s Christmas Oratorio
The Cambridge Philharmonic, one of the UK’s leading music societies, is to start the Christmas season on an uplifting note, with a performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.
Led by conductor Tim Redmond, the Society’s choir and orchestra will be joined by soloists Jennifer France, soprano; Angharad Lyddon, alto; Christopher Lemmings, tenor; and John-Owen Miley-Read, bass.
Some of the most jubilant music Bach ever composed, the Oratorio tells the Christmas story, opening with a heaven-storming timpani stroke and a glorious burst of orchestral colour. Originally intended as a performance over six days, the Christmas Oratorio was premiered in December 1734 in Leipzig, where Bach held the post of Cantor for more than a quarter of a century.
During the concert there will be a collection for Marie Curie cancer care, as part of the charity’s “Sing out” campaign.
Tim Redmond said: “You can’t get more festive than Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and we are once again delighted to be welcoming a quartet of fabulous soloists to really make this a wonderful concert. Along with Handel’s Messiah, the Christmas Oratorio has a special place in the musical calendar and we invite you to begin the Christmas season in the company of Bach’s moving, inspiring and uplifting masterwork.”
